William Falconer

WILLIAM or Bill and often called Scotty was named Uilleam by his mother but registered William by his father; passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 88 years.

Bill was born on November 26, 1921, at 15 Newlandfield Road, Glasgow, Scotland to William and Mary Falconer. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Evelyn Irene Falconer nee Fleming; son Raymond Alasdair Falconer; and brother Alasdair Falconer. As he rejoins his loving wife Evelyn, he leaves behind one sister Iseabal (Falconer) Courtney in South Africa; five children Mary (Jack) Simmons, Dan Falconer, Hazel (Manfred) Janhsen, David (Sue) Falconer, Edith (Larry) Van Leuken; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He left school in 1936 to become a junior clerk for the City of Glasgow, then started a telephone engineer apprenticeship with the British Post Office. In 1938 Bill saw a need to serve his country and joined the RAF and was sent to Canada for training where he met a pretty young lady member of the RCAF whom he married December 25, 1943. After completing training and qualifying as a Bombing and armament instructor as well as a navigator he returned to the UK with the lovely Evelyn of Regina. After the war he was transferred to the middle east then back to the UK taking his release in October 1949. He followed his wife and new daughter Mary to Regina, SK. Meaningful work was hard to find and Bill decided to do what he knew best and joined the RCAF where he stayed until 1956 as a Navigation Officer and survival instructor. Upon his release he became the chief instructor for the City of Edmonton Civil Defense School leaving there in 1961 to become the Emergency Measures Coordinator for the City of Lethbridge where he organized the response to the disastrous snow storm in April and May of 1967, and a few floods in the river bottom. In 1972 Bill was offered a position with forestry at Castle River. After one season he moved his family to Calgary where he served as the city safety officer until 1982. Evelyn and Bill then retired to Osoyoos, BC, moving back to Lethbridge in 1992. Bill and Evelyn moved to Martha’s House as two of it’s first residents. During his life Bill volunteered willingly as a coach and official in soccer, lacrosse and hockey. He belonged at various times to the Air Force 702 Wing, Legion, Optimists and seniors associations in both Osoyoos and Lethbridge. Bill will be remembered by all for his keen sense of humor which he kept to the end.

Family and Friends are invited to pay their respects between 5:00pm and 6:00pm on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.
